Sea Glass, Earthquake, Weather, Photos September 18, 2015 |

Hi,Saludos (greetings) from Huanchaco Beach, Peru, South America.As many of you know, Lin and I are self-supporting missionaries with lots of exciting work helping families in our community - Huanchaco, Peru.   In the News ~You might have heard of a big earthquake, 8.4, in Chile, the country south of us.Well, that is a long way away and we weren't affected here on the beach in North Central Peru. What likely will affect us a lot is the El Niño weather phenomena that is due to bring heavy rains and flooding to areas near us. What does that mean for sea glass hunting here in Huanchaco Beach? Well, the main difference will be rivers overflowing and bringing lots of riff raff down from storm damage - including a lot of glass from clandestine dumps. However, that glass will be fresh - future sea glass, of course, but not an immediate increase on our beach. We have a dry riverbed right here in town that almost surely will flashflood. But most of the flash trash, uprooted trees, and trouble will happen at a river about 9 miles south of here. The currents will eventually wash the trash-to-treasure from that river north along the beach to where we currently live. With the constant extreme wave action here it won't take long to turn that into treasures. Give it about 5 years and we will be reaping the benefits in sea glass.  |
